It converts your APR to a monthly interest rate (APR ÷ 12 ÷ 100), then simulates your balance month by month: each month it adds interest on the remaining balance and subtracts your fixed payment, repeating until the balance reaches zero or 600 months (50 years) is reached.

If your fixed monthly payment is less than or equal to the interest charged on your balance that month, the balance will never shrink. In that case the calculator shows a warning telling you to increase your monthly payment instead of an estimated payoff time.

A higher APR means more interest accrues on your remaining balance each month, which increases both the total interest paid and, if your payment stays fixed, the number of months needed to reach a zero balance.

Yes, the simulation runs for a maximum of 600 months (50 years). If your balance still hasn't been cleared by then given your current balance, APR, and payment, you should increase your monthly payment.
