How to Use the Weight Converter

  1. Choose the unit you are converting from in the "From Unit" dropdown, such as Kilogram (kg) or Pound (lb).
  2. Choose the unit you want to convert to in the "To Unit" dropdown, such as Ounce (oz) or Gram (g).
  3. Type the amount you want to convert in the "Value" field.
  4. Click "Convert" to see the equivalent weight right away.

How the Weight Conversion Works

The converter uses the kilogram as its reference. Each unit has a fixed value in kilograms: the number you enter is multiplied by the value of the "From" unit to get kilograms, then divided by the value of the "To" unit. The metric units are simple powers of ten, while the imperial units are tied to the pound, which has been defined since 1959 as exactly 0.45359237 kg.

UnitValue in kilogramsNote
Milligram0.000001one-thousandth of a gram; used for medicine doses
Gram0.001one-thousandth of a kilogram
Quintal100used for grain and crop trade in India
Tonne (metric ton)1,000equal to 10 quintals
Ounce0.0283495one-sixteenth of a pound
Pound0.453592exact value 0.45359237 kg
Stone6.3502914 pounds

The imperial factors are stored to six significant figures, so a result can differ from the exact value in the sixth digit. For example, 1 kg shows as 2.204624 lb here against an exact 2.2046226 lb. That gap is far smaller than the error of any household or shop scale.

Worked Examples

Fitness apps and gym equipment made for the US market often show weight in pounds. A person weighing 70 kg is 70 ÷ 0.453592 ≈ 154.32 lb. In the other direction, a 150 lb reading is 150 × 0.453592 ≈ 68.04 kg.

Birth weights are another common case. Relatives abroad may ask for a baby's weight in pounds and ounces. A 3.2 kg baby converts to about 7.055 lb. The whole number is the pounds; multiply the remainder by 16 to get ounces: 0.055 × 16 ≈ 0.88, so the baby weighs about 7 lb 1 oz.

For produce, 2.5 quintals of wheat is 2.5 × 100 = 250 kg, or 0.25 tonne. Ten quintals make one tonne, which is why mandi rates per quintal and freight rates per tonne differ by a factor of ten.

Units You May Meet in India

  • Quintal: the Minimum Support Price for crops is announced in rupees per quintal, and mandi rates are usually quoted the same way. One quintal is 100 kg.
  • Tola: gold is priced per 10 grams today, but older jewellers and family records still use the tola, which is 11.6638 g. The tola is not in this converter, so divide grams by 11.6638 to get tolas; 100 g of gold is about 8.57 tola.
  • Carat: in gold, carat (karat) describes purity, such as 22K or 24K, not weight. The carat used for diamonds and gemstones is a weight unit of 200 mg.
  • Ton versus tonne: the tonne here is the metric ton of 1,000 kg. A US short ton is 907.18 kg and a UK long ton is 1,016.05 kg, so check which one a foreign document means.

Frequently Asked Questions

1 kilogram equals approximately 2.205 pounds. Set "From Unit" to Kilogram (kg) and "To Unit" to Pound (lb) to confirm any amount.

1 pound equals 16 ounces. Select Pound (lb) as "From Unit" and Ounce (oz) as "To Unit", then enter 1 to see the result.

1 quintal equals 100 kilograms, commonly used for weighing crops and agricultural produce in India. 1 stone equals about 6.35 kilograms, commonly used in the UK and Ireland for body weight.

One tola is 11.6638 grams, which is often rounded to 11.66 g. Gold rates in India are now quoted per 10 grams, so 10 g is a little less than one tola (about 0.857 tola).

Not always. A tonne (metric ton) is 1,000 kg. The word "ton" can also mean a US short ton of 2,000 lb (907.18 kg) or a UK long ton of 2,240 lb (1,016.05 kg). Also note that the "ton" in a 1.5-ton air conditioner is a measure of cooling capacity, not weight.
