How the Fill-Up Cost Is Calculated
The calculation is a single multiplication: Total Cost = Quantity × Price Per Unit. For petrol and diesel the quantity is in litres and the price is per litre. For CNG the quantity is in kilograms and the price is per kg. The result is rounded to two decimal places, the same way a pump dispenser shows paise.
At the pump most people ask for a round rupee amount rather than a fixed number of litres. To find how much fuel that buys, turn the formula around: Quantity = Amount ÷ Price Per Unit. The table below does this for some common amounts.
Worked Examples
Filling a hatchback with 35 litres of petrol at ₹104.50 per litre: 35 × 104.50 = ₹3,657.50.
Topping up an SUV with 12 litres of diesel at ₹89.50 per litre: 12 × 89.50 = ₹1,074.00.

Why the Price Changes from City to City
Petrol and diesel are not under GST. Their retail price is made up of the oil company's base price, central excise duty, the dealer's commission and state VAT or sales tax. Because each state sets its own VAT, the same fuel can cost several rupees more per litre across a state border, and some states add local cesses on top. Oil marketing companies revise retail prices from time to time, so the rate you paid last month may not be the rate today.
CNG pricing is set separately by the city gas distribution company that supplies your area, which is why CNG rates in two nearby cities can differ quite a bit.
Practical Tips at the Pump
Check that the dispenser reads zero before filling starts, and compare the final amount on the display with what this calculator gives for the litres shown.
Premium or branded fuels (higher-octane petrol, additive diesel) carry a higher per-litre price. Use that price, not the regular rate, when checking a bill.
If your bill seems wrong, you can ask the outlet for a quantity check. Retail outlets are expected to keep a certified 5-litre measure for this purpose.
