Target Heart Rate Calculator

Use this free online target heart rate calculator to find your maximum heart rate and personalized training zones. Enter your age, and optionally your resting heart rate, to calculate your target heart rate using either the simple percentage method or the more precise Karvonen method.

How to Use the Target Heart Rate Calculator

  1. Enter your Age (years) in the age field.
  2. Optionally, enter your Resting Heart Rate (bpm) for a more precise result using the Karvonen method.
  3. Click "Calculate Target Heart Rate" to see your maximum heart rate and method used.
  4. Review the "Target Heart Rate Zones" table for target rates at different exercise intensities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Maximum heart rate is estimated using the common formula: Max HR = 220 - age.

If you leave Resting Heart Rate blank, the calculator uses the simple method (Max HR × intensity percentage). If you enter a resting heart rate, it switches to the Karvonen method, which is ((Max HR - Resting HR) × intensity) + Resting HR, generally considered more precise since it factors in your fitness level.

The table shows target heart rates at 50%, 60%, 70%, and 85% intensity, representing training zones ranging from light activity to vigorous exercise.

If age is zero, negative, or blank, or if a resting heart rate is entered as zero or negative, the calculator shows an error message instead of calculating your target heart rate.
