What Professional Tax Is

Professional tax is a small tax that state governments charge on employment, professions and trades. For salaried people, the employer deducts it from monthly pay and deposits it with the state. The Constitution caps it at ₹2,500 per person per year, which is why the highest monthly rate in most states is ₹200.

The calculator finds the slab your gross monthly salary falls in for the chosen state and shows that month's deduction. The annual figure is normally 12 times the monthly amount. Where a state collects a different amount in one month to reach the ₹2,500 yearly limit, as Maharashtra does, the annual figure reflects that.

Several states and union territories, including Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, do not charge professional tax on salaries. States such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha do, often on half-yearly or annual income; use "Other / Custom Rate" with the amount shown on your payslip.

States revise their slabs from time to time, and some have different rules for women or senior citizens. For example, Maharashtra exempts women whose salary is up to ₹25,000 a month. Confirm the current slab with your state commercial tax or professional tax department.

Gross salary here means your total monthly earnings before deductions, not just basic pay. If your salary moves into a higher slab after an increment, the deduction changes from that month onward.

Professional Tax and Your Income Tax

  • Under the old tax regime, professional tax paid is deducted from your salary income (section 16(iii) under the old Act), so it slightly reduces your taxable income.
  • Under the new tax regime, this deduction is not allowed. You still have to pay the professional tax; it simply does not reduce your income tax.
  • The amount deducted appears on your payslip and in Form 16, so you can check it against this calculator.
  • If you change jobs within a state, make sure both employers together do not deduct more than the yearly maximum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Professional Tax is levied by state governments (under respective state Professional Tax Acts), not the central government, so each state sets its own salary slabs and rates - and some states, like Delhi and Haryana, don't levy it at all.

Eleven months at ₹200 add up to ₹2,200. The extra ₹100 in February brings the yearly total to ₹2,500, the maximum allowed. The calculator shows ₹2,500 as the annual amount for this slab.

In states that levy it, yes. Doctors, lawyers, chartered accountants, shop owners and other self-employed people usually register with the state and pay a fixed yearly amount themselves, since there is no employer to deduct it. The rules and amounts are set by each state.
