How the Flooring Estimate Works
Floor area = Room length × Room width, in square metres.
Area to buy = Floor area × (1 + Wastage ÷ 100). This is the quantity of material to order, since some is lost to cutting at walls, doorways and pillars.
Material cost = Area to buy × Cost per m².
Because the cost is applied to the area including wastage, the estimate reflects what you will actually pay the supplier, not just the cost of the visible floor.
Worked Example
A living room of 5 m × 4 m is to get laminate flooring at ₹1,200 per m², with 5% wastage. Floor area = 20 m². Area to buy = 20 × 1.05 = 21 m². Material cost = 21 × 1,200 = ₹25,200. Skirting, underlay, adhesive, labour and GST would be added on top of this figure.
Converting Per-Square-Foot Prices
Most showrooms in India quote flooring prices per square foot, while this calculator asks for a price per square metre. One square metre is 10.764 square feet, so multiply the per-sq ft price by 10.764.

Wastage by Flooring Type
The right allowance depends on how the material is supplied and laid:
Laminate and engineered wood planks: 5–8% for straight runs, 10–12% for diagonal or herringbone patterns.
Sheet vinyl: depends on roll width. A room narrower than the roll wastes little; a wider room needs a seam and may waste a full strip. Plan the roll layout first.
Natural stone such as marble or granite slabs: often 10–15% or more, because slabs come in irregular sizes, have natural flaws and need pattern matching.
Vitrified and ceramic tiles: around 10%, though the Tile Calculator gives a better piece count for tiles.
Getting a Realistic Total
Measure wall to wall at floor level, including the space under doors that will be covered, and treat each room separately. Corridors and wardrobe niches are easy to forget.
Ask whether the supplier sells by the box or by the square metre. If by box, round your area up to a whole number of boxes.
Budget separately for the floor preparation. Uneven screed often needs levelling before laminate or vinyl can be laid, and this can cost more than expected.
Keep one or two spare boxes or a small offcut supply for repairs, since flooring designs are often discontinued within a few years.
