How to Use the Area Converter

  1. Select the starting unit in the "From Unit" dropdown, such as Square Meter (m²) or Acre.
  2. Select the target unit in the "To Unit" dropdown, such as Hectare (ha) or Square Foot (ft²).
  3. Enter the area you want to convert in the "Value" field.
  4. Click "Convert" to view the converted area instantly.

How Area Units Relate to Each Other

All six units are converted through the square metre. The value you enter is multiplied by the "From" unit's size in square metres and divided by the size of the "To" unit. An area unit is the square of a length unit, so its factor is the length factor squared: a foot is 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 m².

UnitSize in square metresBasis
Square foot0.092903040.3048 m × 0.3048 m
Square yard (gaj)0.836127369 square feet
Acre4,046.856422443,560 square feet
Hectare10,000100 m × 100 m
Square kilometre1,000,000100 hectares

The converter stores the square foot, square yard and acre factors rounded to six significant figures, so the last digits can drift slightly. For instance, it shows 1 acre as about 43,560.06 sq ft rather than exactly 43,560. For property and land work this difference is negligible.

Worked Examples

A residential plot of 30 ft × 40 ft has an area of 1,200 sq ft. In square metres that is 1,200 × 0.092903 ≈ 111.48 m². Because one square yard is exactly 9 sq ft, the same plot is 1,200 ÷ 9 ≈ 133.33 sq yd, which a dealer in Delhi or Uttar Pradesh would call about 133 gaj.

A flat advertised at 1,000 sq ft is about 92.9 m². When comparing it with a project brochure in square metres, make sure both figures refer to the same kind of area, carpet or built-up, before comparing prices.

For farmland, 2.5 acres × 4,046.86 = 10,117.15 m², which is about 1.012 hectares. A quick check: one hectare is roughly 2.471 acres, so a little over 2.47 acres should come out just above one hectare.

Property and Land Measurement in India

  • Gaj: in much of north India, plot sizes are quoted in gaj, which in property dealings means a square yard (9 sq ft). A 100 gaj plot is 900 sq ft or about 83.6 m².
  • Carpet, built-up and super built-up area: carpet area is the usable floor inside the walls, built-up area adds the wall thickness, and super built-up area adds a share of lobbies, lifts and other common areas. Under the RERA Act, 2016, developers must state the carpet area, so use that figure when comparing flats.
  • Bigha, biswa, guntha, kanal and marla: these traditional land units are still common in revenue records, but their size changes from state to state and sometimes between districts. A guntha is typically one-fortieth of an acre (1,089 sq ft) where it is used, and in Punjab and Haryana a kanal is usually 20 marla, but bigha in particular has no single national value. Take the local figure from the land record or tehsil office, convert it to square feet or square metres, and then use this tool.
  • A common mistake is to convert an area using a length factor, for example multiplying square metres by 3.28. Because both sides of the square change, the correct factor is 3.2808 × 3.2808 ≈ 10.764.

Frequently Asked Questions

1 square meter equals approximately 10.764 square feet. Set "From Unit" to Square Meter (m²) and "To Unit" to Square Foot (ft²) to check any value.

1 acre equals approximately 4,046.86 square meters, making it a common unit for measuring land and property size.

In plot sales, one gaj means one square yard, which is exactly 9 square feet or about 0.836 square metres. To convert a size in gaj, choose Square Yard as the "From Unit".

One hectare is about 2.471 acres, and one acre is about 0.4047 hectare. Government land records and agricultural statistics often use hectares, while sale deeds in many states still use acres.

A bigha has no single standard size. Its value differs between states such as Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam, and sometimes within a state. Giving one figure would be misleading, so find the local definition in square feet or square metres and convert from there.
