Use this free online countdown calculator to see exactly how many days, hours, minutes, and seconds are left until any future date and time — perfect for birthdays, events, deadlines, or launches.
How to Use the Countdown Calculator
Optionally name your event in "Event Name".
Pick the "Target Date" and "Target Time" you are counting down to.
Click "Start Countdown" to see the live days, hours, minutes, and seconds remaining.
How the Countdown Is Calculated
Every second, the page subtracts the current time on your device from the target moment and splits the gap into whole units. The Days figure counts complete 24-hour periods, Hours shows what is left after the days (0 to 23), then Minutes (0 to 59) and Seconds (0 to 59).
If you leave Target Time empty, the countdown runs to midnight at the start of the chosen date (00:00). So a countdown to a festival "on 1 November" with no time set reaches zero as that day begins, not when the event starts in the evening.
Example
On 2 October 2026 at 6:45 pm you set a countdown to 1 January 2027 with no time entered. The gap is 90 days, 5 hours and 15 minutes, so the display starts at 90 Days, 5 Hours, 15 Minutes, 0 Seconds and ticks down from there.
Note that 90 days here means 90 full days still to go. Counting the calendar dates themselves, including the start and end days, would give a different number, which is a common source of confusion when people compare countdown apps.
Good Uses and Practical Tips
Exam preparation: counting down to a board exam or entrance test makes it easier to plan revision by the number of days left rather than by vague weeks.
Deadlines: tax filing dates, fee payment last dates, or the closing time of an online application form. Enter the exact closing time, such as 23:59, rather than leaving the time blank.
Personal events: weddings, trips, a baby's due date or a product launch. Type a name in Event Name so the saved countdown is easy to recognise when you return.
Limitations to Know
The target is read in your device's own time zone. If you are counting down to an event in another country, convert its time to your local time first, or the countdown will be off by the time difference.
The countdown is only as accurate as your device clock. If the clock is wrong, so is the countdown.
Only one countdown is saved at a time, and it is stored in this browser. Starting a new one replaces the old, and it will not appear on your phone if you set it on a laptop.
There is no alarm or notification when the countdown reaches zero; the page simply switches to showing time elapsed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Once started, the countdown refreshes every second automatically for as long as you keep this page open — no need to click again.
The calculator shows a message that the moment has already passed, along with how much time has elapsed since it happened.
No. Once started, your countdown is saved on this device (in your browser), so refreshing this page, closing the tab, or coming back later keeps it running toward the same target. Click "Clear" to remove it and start a new one.
It uses 00:00, the very start of the target date, in your device's time zone. Set a time explicitly if your event happens later in the day.
The page keeps one saved countdown. Starting another replaces it. If you need to track a second date, the Date Difference Calculator can tell you how many days remain without replacing your saved countdown.
