Trip Fuel Cost Calculator

Calculate the fuel cost for a specific one-way or round trip, based on the distance, your vehicle's mileage, and the fuel price.

How to Use the Trip Fuel Cost Calculator

  1. Enter the "One-Way Distance (km)" for your trip.
  2. Select "Round Trip" or "One-Way Only".
  3. Enter your vehicle's "Mileage (km/liter)" and the "Fuel Price (₹/liter)".
  4. Click "Calculate Trip Fuel Cost" to see your total fuel cost for the trip.

How the Trip Fuel Cost Is Worked Out

  1. Total distance = one-way distance, doubled if "Round Trip" is selected.
  2. Fuel required = total distance ÷ mileage.
  3. Total fuel cost = fuel required × fuel price.

Example: a 300 km drive each way, as a round trip, in a car averaging 16 km per litre with petrol at ₹101 per litre. Total distance is 600 km, fuel needed is 600 ÷ 16 = 37.5 litres, and the fuel cost is 37.5 × 101 = ₹3,787.50. Shared among four friends, that is about ₹947 each.

Same 600 km Round Trip, Different Vehicles

Vehicle (assumed mileage, price)Fuel neededFuel cost
Commuter motorcycle (45 km/l, ₹101/l)13.33 l₹1,346.67
Petrol hatchback (18 km/l, ₹101/l)33.33 l₹3,366.67
Petrol sedan (16 km/l, ₹101/l)37.50 l₹3,787.50
Diesel SUV (13 km/l, ₹90/l)46.15 l₹4,153.85

Mileage and prices here are illustrative. Use your own vehicle's figures and the price in the state where you will fill up.

Planning Tips for Road Trips

  • Take the distance from a maps app for the route you will actually drive, then add around 5 to 10% for detours, sightseeing and finding a hotel. On the example above, 10% extra distance adds about ₹379.
  • Use a highway mileage figure for expressway stretches but a lower one for ghats, hill roads or heavy city traffic at either end of the trip.
  • Fuel prices vary between states because VAT rates differ, so filling up before crossing a border can sometimes save money on long trips. Check prices along the route.
  • Compare the fuel needed with your tank size to plan stops. If the trip needs 37.5 litres and your tank holds 40, plan at least one refill so you never run on reserve in an unfamiliar area.

Only if the return route is about the same length. Round Trip simply doubles the one-way distance. If the two routes differ, choose One-Way Only and enter the combined distance of both legs.

Yes, extra weight, a roof carrier and continuous AC use all lower mileage. The calculator does not adjust for these automatically, so enter a slightly lower mileage than usual for a fully loaded car.
