How Your Age Is Calculated
Age in years, months and days is a calendar count, not a number of days divided by 365. The calculator subtracts your date of birth from today's date part by part and then borrows, the same way you would subtract by hand:
Subtract the birth year from the current year, the birth month from the current month, and the birth day from today's day.
If the day figure is negative, one month is borrowed and the number of days in the previous calendar month (28, 29, 30 or 31) is added to the days.
If the month figure is then negative, one year is borrowed and 12 is added to the months.
Because the borrow uses the real length of last month, the day count is always right for the month you are in, including February in leap years.
Worked Example
Date of birth 15 October 2000, checked on 2 October 2026. Years: 2026 − 2000 = 26. Months: October − October = 0. Days: 2 − 15 = −13, so one month is borrowed and September's 30 days are added, giving 17 days and −1 month. The month is negative, so one year is borrowed: 11 months and 25 years. The result is 25 years, 11 months and 17 days. You can check it: 15 September 2026 plus 17 days is 2 October 2026.

Age Milestones Often Checked in India
People commonly use an exact age to see whether they have crossed a threshold. Some widely known ones, which you should still confirm with the authority concerned because rules and cut-off dates vary:
18 years: eligibility to register as a voter (age is counted on the qualifying date set by the Election Commission) and to apply for a licence to drive a car.
60 years: treated as a senior citizen for income tax, and the usual retirement age for central government employees. 80 years and above is classed as a super senior citizen for income tax.
Exam and recruitment notices state an upper and lower age limit counted on a specific date, such as 1 August or 1 January of the exam year, not on the day you apply.
This tool always measures up to today. To find your age on an exam cut-off date or any other past or future date, use the Date Difference Calculator and enter your date of birth and the cut-off date.
Things to Keep in Mind
Use the date of birth printed on your official record (birth certificate, Class 10 marksheet or passport). Forms usually go by that date even if your family celebrates on a different day.
If you were born on 29 February, the tool counts a new year of age on 1 March in non-leap years. On 28 February you will still show 11 months and some days.
{{ 'agecalculation.guide.tip3' | translate: '"Today" is taken from your device's clock. If your phone or computer date is wrong, the age will be wrong too.' }}
Age is shown in whole days. The time of birth is not considered, so someone born late at night still gains a day at midnight of each date.
Frequently Asked Questions
The calculator compares today's date to your date of birth, then adjusts the years, months, and days so the result is an accurate calendar-based age rather than a simple day count.
Yes, the calculator uses the actual number of days in the previous month (including February in leap years) when working out the day portion of your age.
This page calculates age as on today. For any other date, open the Date Difference Calculator and enter your date of birth and the cut-off date to see the gap between them.
Calculators can borrow days differently when the current day of the month is smaller than your birth day. This tool uses the length of the previous calendar month, which is the most common method, so the years and months will match other tools and the days may differ by one or two near the end of a month.
No. A date of birth later than today produces no result. To count the days until a due date or event, use the Date Difference Calculator.
